Liverpool has opened talks with St Etienne for midfield pair Blaise Matuidi and Dimitri Payet.
Driven by Reds chief Damien Comolli, the former St Etienne sports director, Liverpool are in negotiations about a summer deal for midfielder Matuidi - and have also registered their interest in winger Payet.
Powerhouse Matuidi is the player Comolli most covets.
The midfielder still has two years to run on his current deal, but Les Verts chief Christophe Galtier is prepared to sell this summer.
Payet is also attracting Ligue Une interest, but like Matuidi, Galtier favours a foreign sale to maximize value.
