Liverpool has been encouraged in their pursuit of Ajax's Toby Alderweireld after the defender’s father admitted they had failed to agree terms with Bayer Leverkusen.
The Reds are keen on the 24-year-old Belgian international, but the Germans thought they were in pole position to sign him after entering into initial talks, but it appears the player was unhappy with the wages on offer.
His father and representative, Vic Alderweireld, told Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf: "The proposal [from Leverkusen] was interesting in sporting terms, but financially we had some questions.
"We have a counter proposal and will wait to see how Leverkusen reacts.
"We are not in a rush to sign. At worst, he plays another season in Amsterdam and leaves as a free agent after next season."
