Xabi Alonso and Alvaro Arbeloa have admitted it will be a big blow for Liverpool if star striker Fernando Torres is ruled out long term.
Torres was forced to hobble out of Spain's World Cup qualifier against Belgium after just 16 minutes with a muscle strain.
And he is now a major doubt for the Champions League tie at Atletico Madrid next week, as well as the crunch clash with Chelsea in the Premier League the following weekend.
The 24-year-old has scored four goals in his last three games after a slow start to the season.
And Alonso said: "It is bad news for Liverpool because from now until Christmas we do not have a break and we have some key games coming up against Atletico Madrid and Chelsea.
"I know he is disappointed because it is not the first time he has picked up an injury on international duty and he was also in a great run of form recently."
Meanwhile, Arbeloa added: "We hope that it's not too serious and that he will be able to play again soon because he would be a big loss for Liverpool.
"He looked upset because he was very excited about playing against his former team Atletico Madrid next week."
