Vurnon Anita Latest Player Linked With Liverpool

Liverpool has taken over from Arsenal as the front runner’s to sign Ajax defensive midfielder Vurnon Anita with reports indicating that they are prepared to pay 15 million euro to secure his services.

The 22-year-old, who won a Dutch title last season with the Dutch side, signed a new two-year deal at Ajax recently which reportedly includes the 15 million release clause.

Arsenal and Spurs had been linked with a move for the player but both have refused to pay the asking price, leaving Liverpool in pole position to secure his services.

Anita fits in with the new transfer policy this at Anfield with the club looking to recruit players under the age of 25.

However according to a recent report in Goal.com Anita’s agent stated that he had yet to hear from Liverpool “The way I understand things, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur are the two interested teams, They have not approached me, though, and I have not been in touch with Ajax either, to ask whether there has been contact with other clubs.”

Ince Lad Has The Magic Dutch

Paul Ince’s son Thomas is being chased by Ajax and Rangers.

The Liverpool kid, 19, has been offered a new four-year deal but feels his chances of first-team football are better elsewhere.

Ince has yet to make a full debut since signing on youth terms in 2008.

He was an unused sub in the Europa League qualifier against FK Rabotnicki but came off the bench in Liverpool's League Cup loss to Northampton for his debut.

Liverpool Keep Close Eye On Starlet After Old Firm Rejection

Liverpool has been left disappointed by the news that Ayr United striker Mark Shankland has signed a two-year deal with the club.

The 15-year-old, the youngster player in the club's history, will make the step up to the Ayr first-team next season after spending last season in the club's youth academy.

The move will disappoint Liverpool, who the striker spent a week training with, while Celtic and Rangers were also said to be interested.

Ayr chairman Lachlan Cameron said: "Mark has a bright future ahead of him and we believe that to leave to play in England or the Old Firm at this stage of his career would be the wrong move for him or any of our youngsters.

“Mark was invited to attend the Liverpool Academy recently for a week’s training. He played in a couple of trial matches and scored twice against Sheffield United and Liverpool have indicated that they will keep a close eye on Mark while he continues his development here.”

Shankland said: "I am delighted to sign for Ayr. The Academy coaches are brilliant and the backroom staff has advised me about how I can progress here, whereas I might fall into the cracks at a team the size of the Old Firm.”

Liverpool Dealt Decisive Blow In Pursuit Of Starlet Target

Liverpool will miss out on Yann M'Vila this summer, according to Rennes general manager Pierre Dreossi.

Reports in France have claimed that both Kenny Dalglish has been monitoring the player with a view to bringing him to England, but Dreossi has firmly shut the door.

"We will not listen to any offers for him. This has already been decided by the club and the player," talkSPORT quote Dreossi as saying.

"M'Vila will not be going anywhere, even more so after he signed on for another year."

However, the Anfield outfit could renew their interest in the French international next summer, with Dreossi going on to state that any move could now be put on hold until next summer

“If he leaves it will not be until summer 2012."

The news comes as a blow to Liverpool, who is believed to be monitoring a handful of players in the position this summer as Dalglish looks to strengthen his squad during the transfer window.

After securing the services of Jordan Henderson for a fee in the region of £16 million last week, the Reds chief is poised to continue his spending spree with a left back, winger and striker also thought to be on the Liverpool agenda.

Damien Comolli, director of football at Liverpool, is an admirer of the 20-year-old French international, and was thought to be working alongside Dalglish in trying to persuade M'Vila to make an Anfield switch.

Hodgson: Kenny Will Nurture Jordan

Former Liverpool striker David Hodgson believes Kenny Dalglish is the sort of father figure who can bring the best out of Jordan Henderson.

Hodgson, who played for the Reds 49 times in the early 80s, arrived at Anfield from a north-east club as an England U21 international, just as Henderson has.

He believes there is no better place for the former Sunderland midfielder to learn his trade as he aims to take his career to the next level.

"Kenny is an astute person. He understands the kind of character that will fit in at the club," said Hodgson exclusively in this week's LFC Weekly.

"Liverpool is paying a lot of money for Henderson's potential. But Kenny has paid a lot of money in the past on potential before unlocking it. He knows how to nurture talent and make someone like Henderson the finished product.

"The wonderful thing for Henderson is that he is arriving at a club where the manager will be a father figure to him. Kenny will embrace him and Henderson will benefit hugely from that."

Hodgson says that Henderson has all of the characteristics of a modern attacking midfielder.

He added: "He's got a good passing range with good accuracy and movement. Although he has only managed a couple of goals in the seasons he's played for Sunderland, I would think in the right side he would be capable of chipping in with a dozen per season.
"I would like to think that as a lad from the north-east, he does Liverpool proud and spends the next 10 years there, winning everything in sight. That would be wonderful."

Treble Heroes Set For Masters

Treble heroes Patrik Berger and Stephane Henchoz will line-up for Liverpool legends in the Selco Mersey Masters at the Echo Arena on Saturday.

The duo will join other stars from Liverpool's illustrious past in the tournament that also includes teams from Everton, Tranmere Rovers, Wigan Athletic, Bolton Wanderers and Blackpool.

Former Liverpool captain Mark Wright is also expected to feature for the Reds as they prepare to battle it out for the Mersey Masters title and the chance to qualify for September's Grand Final.

Academy Duo On Target For England

Adam Morgan and Jack Dunn both found the net as England warmed up for the U17 World Cup with a 5-4 friendly win over the Ivory Coast.

The Young Lions warmed up for Sunday's opening World Cup match with Rwanda by coming back from 4-2 down to win in a behind closed doors friendly.

England had gone 2-0 up but Ivory Coast stormed back to turn the game around in the second half to lead 4-2.

However, inspired by two of Kirkby's finest scholars England regained their advantage.

Morgan netted a penalty and Dunn grabbed the winner with a blistering drive to win it 5-4.

Morgan and Dunn are joined in John Peacock's squad by right winger Raheem Sterling, left-back Brad Smith, goalkeeper Tyrell Belford and centre-back Matty Regan.

Left-back Tom King will also be at the tournament having been called-up by Australia.

The U17 World Cup kicks-off on June 18 and the final is in Mexico City on July 10.

England begins their campaign on Sunday, June 19 when they take on Rwanda. Also in the group are Uruguay and Canada.

Jordan Henderson Not Daunted By Huge Liverpool Transfer Fee

Jordan Henderson today declared the size of the transfer fee Liverpool paid Sunderland for him filled him with confidence, not fear.

Henderson admitted it had been a hectic week after he was allowed to complete his move to Anfield before linking up with the England Under-21 squad for their European Championship campaign in Denmark.

The midfielder, who turns 21 on Friday, reportedly cost in the region of £16million and some have questioned whether Liverpool paid over the odds.

But Henderson has vowed to prove he is worth the money and revealed he plans to begin repaying his fee by helping the Reds qualify for next season's Champions League.

"I don't really make the figures up but it just shows that Liverpool have faith in me," he told Press Association Sport.

"So I'll work hard and improve as a player and learn a lot and hopefully I can repay them."

Henderson has a chance to win over the doubters while on international duty this summer, but ultimately he will be judged on whether he manages to help Liverpool get back into the Champions League, which they have missed out on in the past two seasons.

He added: "Every player wants to play in the Champions League, but I think we've got to focus on the Premier League first.

"Hopefully, this season can be a good season for Liverpool."

Henderson insisted it was not an easy decision to quit Sunderland, the team he grew up supporting.

"You've got to think about these things," he said.

"It's a massive, massive thing in my life and my career but obviously it's a great opportunity for me to go there and improve as a player.

"So it was an opportunity I couldn't really turn down to be honest."

Henderson added of the past five days: "It's been a little bit hectic but it's been brilliant as well.

"So a really good week for me and hopefully it'll get better."

Henderson was unable to show off his skills in England Under-21s' 1-1 Group B draw against Spain on Sunday night, which saw Stuart Pearce's side get out of jail in a game their opponents completely dominated.

"On Sunday, Spain made it really difficult for us," said Henderson.

"They're obviously a gifted team on the ball but I think that we showed great character and a good attitude to stay in the game and get the late goal.

"I think that's what the positives were that we've got to take out of the game.

"We didn't have much of the game but we managed to get something out of it."

There is always the danger England's players could feel they have got the hardest group game out of the way ahead of Wednesday's clash with Ukraine and Sunday's match with the Czech Republic.

Henderson urged caution, though, and said: "Ukraine and Czech Republic are two massive teams still.

"We've got two big games coming up but we'll prepare for them and we'll be ready for them."

Liverpool Set For Adam Talks

Sky Sports News sources understand Liverpool will hold talks with Blackpool's Charlie Adam later this week.

The Scotland international has long been a target of the Anfield club and they failed in an attempt to agree a deal in the January transfer window.

Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish's interest in his compatriot is not thought to have ended and he is again attempting to secure the playmaker, with Sky Bet suspending their market earlier on Monday.

Sky sources understand discussions will consequently take place with relegated Blackpool and Adam later this week.

The Reds have already signed Jordan Henderson from Sunderland and are expected to continue to remodel their squad this summer.

Ongoing interested in Adam, who suits Fenway Sports Group's policy for young, British players, adds to the uncertainty surrounding Raul Meireles.

Despite a promising debut season in the Premier League, it has been speculated that the 28-year-old could be sold due to his age and doubts about his fitness.

Liverpool Linked To Birmingham Center-Back Duo

With Daniel Agger continually injured, Martin Skrtel's form regressing somewhat and Jamie Carragher continuing to age, Kenny Dalglish finds himself in need for both depth and future at center back as part of Liverpool's summer spending spree.

To that end, the Birmingham City center-back duo of Roger Johnson and Scott Dann has been linked to Anfield moves, according to Sky Sports.

While the Blues were relegated this past season, Johnson and Dann were seen as blameless in that result, with the club actually being relatively stingy in defense -- simply lacking any ability to score goals.

Dann's midseason injury also was widely viewed as a turning point.

With Blackburn's Phil Jones heading to Old Trafford and Bolton's Gary Cahill most often linked to a move to the Emirates, Dann, 24, is perhaps the best young Premier League center-back prospect available.

Johnson, 28, is a little bit older than Dann, but he has proven to be a rock at the back, and has started every Premier League match for the past two seasons. Both are valued at approximately £4 million, though they would likely cost more.

Prem Quartet Chasing Milosevic

Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham and Sunderland are reported to be doing battle for the signature of Swedish defender Alexander Milosevic.

A number of scouts are believed to have watched the 18-year-old full-back in action against Malmo on Sunday.

Milosevic's agent, Nenad Lukic, admits he is aware of interest in the defender from England, but insists there have been no offers for the teenager.

"I know that there are English clubs that are interested but we haven't heard anything concrete," Lukic told Aftonbladet.

"We respect AIK (Solna) too. They were courageous enough to give a young player the chance to play in the starting XI."

Solna's sporting director, Jens Andersson, knows there are clubs chasing Milosevic, but he refused to reveal their identities.

"I know that there are several clubs that follow him but I never comment on specific clubs," noted Andersson.

Inter Line Up Bid For Liverpool Midfield Ace

Inter Milan are considering a move for Liverpool midfielder Raul Meireles, according to reports in Italy.

Inter president Massimo Moratti reckons the Portugal international would fit in well at the San Siro and is keen to press ahead with an enquiry.

The 28-year-old moved to Anfield from Porto in a £13m deal last summer and enjoyed a promising first season in the Premier League, scoring five goals in 33 appearances.

But Meireles will face fierce competition for places at Liverpool following the arrival of Jordan Henderson and the return to fitness of Steven Gerrard over the summer.

And, should Liverpool complete their rumoured move for Blackpool's Charlie Adam, there could be another central midfielder for Meireles to compete with.

He is under contract until 2014 but reports suggested a bid of around £14m might be enough to test Liverpool's resolve to hold on to him.

Agent: 'Subotic Won't Quit Dortmund For Liverpool'

Liverpool have been told they will need to look elsewhere for a new central defender after Neven Subotic confirmed he has no intention of leaving Borussia Dortmund.

Kenny Dalglish is eager to improve his options in central defence this summer and Birmingham City defender Scott Dann is also a target.

Subotic has been discussed at Anfield and the Dortmund defender has no shortage of admirers across Europe.

Manchester United, Arsenal, Barcelona and Real Madrid have all expressed an interest in the 22-year-old defender, who played Under-17 and Under-20 football for USA.

Subotic joined Dortmund from Mainz in 2008 and his performances in defence since then have attracted a long list of potential suitors.

But the player's agent, Stephen Kelly, insists Subotic is eager to remain at Dortmund and represent the German champions in the Champions League next season.

"Neven will not be leaving Dortmund this summer, I am certain. He is happy there and has a very good contract, one that expires in 2014," he said.

"Of course there is interest and, has been from the beginning, but he does not want to leave the club. He wants to play for them in the Champions League."

Jewell: No Bids For Conor Wickham

Ipswich have not received any firm bids for teenage striker Connor Wickham, according to manager Paul Jewell.

Liverpool and Sunderland are among a list of clubs in recent weeks to have been linked with the 18-year-old, who is currently away with Stuart Pearce's England Under-21 squad at the European Championships in Denmark.

Jewell told the club's official website: "Everyone seems to be talking about Connor, but there's been no bid for him.

"We've had enquiries, but enquiries don't mean anything. I could ring up Barcelona and enquire about Lionel Messi, but it doesn't mean I'll get him.

"Connor is happy here and as far as we're concerned he'll be with us for next season. The good thing is that we don't have to sell anyone."

Wickham made his first-team debut for Ipswich as a 16-year-old against Doncaster in 2009.

Arbeloa Admires Dalglish Style

Alvaro Arbeloa feels Kenny Dalglish has succeeded where predecessor Roy Hodgson failed at Anfield because his style is more suited to the team.

The six months the ex-Fulham boss had in charge saw the side struggle for results and performances with many criticizing the Englishman's tactics.

Dalglish replaced him in early January and the turnaround on the field was marked, with the team enjoying the kind of form which would have put them on a par with Chelsea and Manchester City had it been reproduced over a full season.

Real Madrid full-back Arbeloa watched from afar as a club he still holds in great esteem struggled at times and agreed with the consensus that Hodgson was just not the right fit for the Reds.

"I think they played maybe too many long balls under Hodgson," said Arbeloa.

"I think Liverpool are the type of team that has to play more football.

"Technically they have some really good players and they need to play more football.

"I think with Dalglish, who was one of the best players in the history of Liverpool, they look more confident and they improved a lot."

Many attributed Liverpool's problems to a gradual decline since they ran Manchester United a close second in 2009, which appeared to be prompted by the departure of Xabi Alonso to Real.

However, Arbeloa's Madrid team-mate, whom he also played alongside at Liverpool, believes that was too simplistic an explanation and was disrespectful to the players who remained.

In the absence of the experience duo of Alonso and Javier Mascherano, who left for Barcelona last summer, Brazil midfielder Lucas Leiva enjoyed his best season in a Reds shirt.

But Alonso stressed it would be wrong for his former club to be looking for a player with an identical match to his own talents.

"I think that Lucas for example, has improved quite a lot the last few years, he has won a lot of importance in the team and has become quite mature," the Spain international told sportsillustrated.com.

"But [let's not] think about a new Alonso. Try to think of a new pattern, a new pattern of play, a new idea of how to play and that comes from Kenny, as well as (assistant manager) Steve Clarke who's done a great job.

"That's going to be important to create a style, and that's what they're going to try to work on.

"And now, when they sign new players, try to gel them as well as possible."

Pepe Reina Undergoes Surgery

Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina has undergone surgery on a double hernia.

The Spanish international, one of the most consistent goalkeepers in the Premier League, had the non-emergency operation in Munich on Monday morning.

The former Barcelona and Villarreal shot-stopper, who captained Liverpool on occasions when both Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher were unavailable last season, is expected to return with the rest of the squad for pre-season training next month.

Jonjo's Ups And Downs

It’s been an up and down first season at Liverpool for England young gun Jonjo Shelvey, having juggled a big move away from home, captaining his country and trying to establish himself at a new club.

That’s no mean feat for someone who only just turned 19 earlier this year and it’s been a whirlwind 12 months for the Romford-born midfielder.

A regular for England at U16 and U17 level in previous years, Shelvey had the honour of captaining England’s U19s in the first half of the season as he helped Noel Blake’s side through the First Qualifying Round of the European Championship last October.

"It's always an joy to play for England and I've been fortunate enough to have done it since the U16s and it's something that I enjoy," he said.

"To captain them is something special and after playing for the U16s, U17s and U19s, the next step is the Under-21s so that's where I have to be aiming now."

Unfortunately, injury curtailed his international appearances in the second half of the campaign but his move to Anfield has been a different story and there are encouraging signs for his future.

After being a first team regular with Charlton Athletic since he was just 16, Shelvey’s performances at the Valley saw a whole host of clubs chasing his signature and when Liverpool won that race last summer, it was a big move north for the player but one that he has taken on and adapted to particularly well.

Shelvey believes the switch has certainly helped him improve as a footballer, having had to tailor his game a little more since joining the Merseyside giants.

"The defensive side of the game was very new to me when I first came here,” he admitted.

“The staff here organize you very well defensively, and it’s helped me as a person on and off the pitch.

"I'm not so attack-minded any more, I'm getting to know what my job is in the team.”

Shelvey has been rewarded for his development too, making 15 appearances for the Reds in a variety of competitions this season and he admits that it’s all been a bit of a dream for him in his maiden season.

“I enjoy it here and hopefully I can get more starts and be a Liverpool player for a long time," he added.

"The highlight is just coming into training every day. It's a pleasure to get up in the morning knowing you're coming into work at Liverpool Football Club. It's an honour.

"I speak to my brother and he hates getting up in the morning. He gets up at 7am to get a train up to London and he can't stand it. It's just an honour for me to get up and do what I love doing.

"I knew the club was a hard working and family orientated club as soon as I joined. Everyone loves coming to work here. I don't think you could find a better place to work. Everyone is friendly, everyone gets on with everyone."

As a central midfielder, Shelvey has no shortage of players to learn from in training either but there’s one man in particular that he looks up to and it’s no surprise to hear that it’s Liverpool skipper and England dynamo Steven Gerrard.

"I think he's the benchmark for young midfielders - he is for me,” explained Shelvey, whose early performances for Liverpool have seen him compared to his idol in certain quarters.

“Everyone has someone they look up to but he's the one for me and hopefully I can achieve half of what he's achieved.

"It's not a burden for me, it's nice to be compared to people like that. If something's not going well, you can tell yourself, 'Come on, you're supposed to be the next whoever.' It's a bit of inspiration.

"It's nice to be labelled, but you can't rest on what you've done. You have to be your own player, train day in and day out and try to become the best player you can."

Gerrard: Qualification For The Champions League Will Be The Main Aim Next Season

Captain Steven Gerrard has stated that Liverpool’s main target next season will be to qualify for the Champions League but has warned that the club should not raise their expectations too high.

The Reds finished the season in encouraging fashion after Kenny Dalglish took the helm from Roy Hodgson and eventually finished sixth in the Premier League table despite a troublesome start to 2010-11.

England international Gerrard told the Liverpool FC official website that while he is keeping his feet on the ground, he believes that Dalglish’s stewardship at Anfield, with a three-year contract now in place, bodes well for the club.

"I'd love nothing better than to lead the lads to some silverware next year but I don't want to raise expectation by saying that will definitely happen," he said.

"It would be stupid of me to raise expectations any more than they are already.

"At the beginning of every season at Liverpool expectations rise, and now that Kenny is staying and with a few signings I'm sure it'll go through the roof.

"Getting in the Champions League will be the main aim. I think it is for all the clubs in the
Premier League.

"For financial reasons it's so important but it's also the biggest competition for players individually at club level.

"Everyone wants to be involved in it, we've had some fantastic nights at Anfield over the years in the competition and we all want to see those nights return.

Gerrard feels that the lofty aim of qualifying for the Champions League is certainly not out of reach if the club continues in the manner that it finished last season and feels the Reds can compete with the best, but admitted that he would like to see the squad undergo further strengthening.

"We just need to continue what we've been doing during the last six months.

"Hopefully we'll add some more players to strengthen the squad and then we need to compete.

"We are good enough to beat anyone on our day, we just need to find the consistency to challenge for honours."

The 30-year-old skipper missed out on the end of last season after undergoing surgery on his groin following Liverpool’s 3-1 defeat of Manchester United in March but he should be back to fitness in July, in time for the pre-season friendlies.

Gerrard added: "I've had it sorted with surgery and hopefully next year I'll be fit and available after a good rest, with a brand new groin and ready to push on under Kenny.

"I'm due to come back after 12 weeks, so it'll be around when the lads return on 4/5 July.

"Then I've got six weeks of pre-season to get match fit, so by the time the league starts I'm hoping to be in good shape."

Suarez: We Must Maintain Form

Liverpool will need to maintain the kind of form they saw in the second half of the season under Kenny Dalglish if they are to challenge for honours, according to Luis Suarez.

Suarez was one of the key reasons for Liverpool's upturn in fortune under new boss Dalglish and is now optimistic ahead of the 2011-12 season.

"I think the form we have shown over the second half of the season bodes well,'' he told LFC Weekly. "We've been playing well and I think we've been getting into the type of form that we know we'll have to keep up for a whole season if we want to be title contenders.

"This is something we're optimistic about for next season and if we can hit the ground running and maintain the good form then I think we've got a good chance of doing well."

Suarez, a Uruguay international, bagged four goals in 13 games for the Reds but his impact saw him widely regarded as the best signing of the January transfer window.

Dalglish Enters Race For £10m Forward Ace

Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish is set to enter the race for Southampton striker Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Oxlade-Chamberlain has been in impressive form for the Saints over the past couple of seasons and has been on the radar of a number of top Premier League clubs with Arsenal believed to be leading the chase.

However it is believed Kop boss Dalglish has now entered the race to sign to land the signature of the £10million rated forward.

Dalglish has been promised money to spend on summer transfer deals in order to try and get Liverpool among the top four once again.

The Reds boss and the clubs director of football Damien Comolli are both admirers of the St. Mary's youngster and feel Oxlade-Chamberlain will be a great addition to the squad.

Having already spent £20m on Jordan Henderson from Sunderland last week, there are no signs that Dalglish's spending spree is going to come to an end anytime soon.

According to reports in the Daily Mail the Scottish manager is set to hold talks with the 17-year-old's representative about a possible move to Anfield.

It looked as though Oxlade-Chamberlain was set for a summer switch to the Emirates however a 40 per cent sell on clause became a stumbling block for Arsenal.

However Liverpool and Dalglish feel they will be able to agree terms and secure the signing of the England Under 19 star.

Last season, Oxlade-Chamberlain played a key role in Southampton gaining automatic promotion to the Championship, making 41 appearances in all competitions, scoring 11 goals and providing nine assists.

Liverpool And Aston Villa Battling It Out For Argentine Ace

Liverpool and Aston Villa are going head to head in the battle to sign Real Madrid defensive midfielder Fernando Gago. Liverpool, according to the Spanish media are the slight favourites, however Aston Villa are still considered a very live option for the Argentine.

Gago, who has made 92 appearances for Real Madrid, has been told by manager Jose Mourinho that he can leave the Bernabeu and this has prompted the likes of manager-less Aston Villa and Kenny Dalglish, the Liverpool boss, to enquire further about the 25 year old, an interest that has apparently hardened up significantly over the last few days.

Under Jose Mourinho Gago has not had the chances he would have wanted, with the Portuguese manager preferring to use Xabi Alonso and Samir Khedira in midfield, therefore Gago cannot have been too surprised to learn he no longer had a future at the Bernabeu.

Gago himself has not commented on his future, but the Spanish press are certain that Gago will end up at either Anfield or Villa Park next season, no other clubs are considered in the running and it does look like Gago will either be playing under Kenny Dalglish or whoever is finally named as the new Aston Villa boss.

Liverpool To Finally Get Mata

According to reports in Spain Juan Mata looks set to be the next big signing to arrive at Anfield as Liverpool switch their sights to the wings after completing the signing of Midfielder Jordan Henderson.

The 23 year old Spaniard has spent the last four seasons with Valencia after arriving at the Mestalla Stadium from the Real Madrid B team however he has long been linked with a move to Liverpool firstly under Rafa Benitez and now under Kenny Dalglish.

Mata would add some genuine creativity to the wing, something that has been missing at Anfield for a long time, and last season scored 8 goals and created 12 as Valencia claimed 3rd spot in Spain despite selling David Silva and David Villa.

Mata is rated around the 20 million mark and given that Liverpool appears to have a sizeable transfer budget this summer, a move could be on the cards.

Mata is currently on duty with the Spanish under 21 side at the UEFA under-21 European Championship, where he is tipped to one of the stars of the show.

Santi Cazorla 'Eyed By Liverpool'

Santi Cazorla could be one of the influx of transfers at Liverpool, after Pepe Reina apparently recommended him to Kenny Dalglish.

The Reds are focusing most of their efforts on acquiring British stars this summer, but are willing to look overseas if players of the right quality become available.

Villarreal midfielder Cazorla certainly fits into that category. The 26-year-old has won more than 30 caps for Spain and could be the answer to Liverpool's left wing problem.

According to the People, Liverpool's Spanish goalkeeper Reina has told Dalglish his international team-mate has what it takes to succeed in the Premier League.

The Reds are now said to be planning an £18 million bid for Cazorla. The player has a £28 million release clause in his contract, but Villarreal may be prepared to sell for a lower price if he indicates he wants to leave.

Liverpool were expected to move for Aston Villa's Stewart Downing as part of their summer spending spree, but a deal for Cazorla could mean they have no need for the England winger.

Liverpool Hoping To Sign Stewart Downing By End Of The Week

Liverpool reportedly wishes to wrap up a move for Aston Villa winger Stewart Downing by the end of the week.

The left-sided player has been linked with a transfer away from the Birmingham-based club for some time now, with his recent admission of wanting to play in Europe only fuelling the flames of speculation.

Now the News of the World reports that the Reds are keen on tying up a £15 million move for the midfielder by the end of the week.

Liverpool spent heavily in January to bring in Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll following the exit of Fernando Torres, while they have already begun spending this summer by signing Jordan Henderson from Sunderland for a reported £16m.

Peter Gulacsi Reveals Reds Are Looking For A New Deputy To Pepe Reina

Peter Gulacsi has revealed that Liverpool are on the lookout for an experienced new goalkeeper this summer as cover for established No.1, Pepe Reina.

The 21-year-old has made the bench on a few occasions since Kenny Dalglish returned to the Anfield club last season but he knows that it will be an uphill struggle to displace the highly regarded Reina, particularly if reports that Brad Jones could soon move to Merseyside are to be believed.

Gulacsi has spent a year out on loan with Hereford, two more with Tranmere Rovers and is keen to get more action on loan again next season.

"I had already been thinking about my possible departure in March although that time it wasn't a topic that Brad Friedel or Doni may sign for Liverpool,” he told Nemzeti Sport

"Of course it doesn't mean that I want my contract to be terminated because the team relies on me.

“When my agents and I indicated to the club officials that I would like to move to another club on loan they agreed with us and thought the same.

"The club said they rely on me for a long period and it made me very proud. But they added if I go then a seasoned goalkeeper may arrive at the club, which is understandable.

"The best way for me to improve is to play regularly. I don't know where I will play but talks are going well. I have offers from England and also from outside of England.

“I hope within 10 days or two weeks it will be a fact where I will continue my career - on loan.

"I had a fruitful time at Tranmere last year, I played 16 games. Then I went back to Liverpool in December and I sat on the bench on 19 Premier League games and on four Europa League games.

"It was a great honour and a fine experience. It sounds good to be the second goalkeeper of Liverpool but in this case I don't play.

“Pepe Reina is another level, I have to improve a lot if I want to be as good as him.

"At the moment it is not going to happen that the Liverpool line-up has my name in and it would be a mistake to wait for Reina's red card or injury. I want to play."

Liverpool's David Ngog Set To Move To Sunderland For £5m

Liverpool striker David Ngog is reportedly set to join Sunderland for a £5 million fee.

According to News of the World, the Black Cats have agreed to buy the striker and thereby reduce the fee due for the transfer of Jordan Henderson earlier this week to around £11m.

Henderson passed his medical at the Anfield club on Wednesday, allowing his transfer to be completed and mark one of the first major Premier League acquisitions of the summer.

Ngog, who was signed by the Reds from Paris Saint Germaine under Rafa Benitez in 2008, is set to put pen to paper this week after coming back from holiday.

Melwood Baby Boom Continues

Martin Skrtel is the latest Liverpool player to announce he will soon become a father.

The wives or partners of Fabio Aurelio, Jay Spearing, Steven Gerrard and Dirk Kuyt are all pregnant - while Glen Johnson, Pepe Reina, Christian Poulsen and Lucas Leiva have each celebrated births in the last few months.

Now Skrtel's girlfriend Barbora is with child.

"Yes, I can confirm this news," Skrtel said. "Barbora is five months pregnant and it is a boy.

"I am extremely happy and now I hope everything goes well and without any problems. We don't want to speak about it too much, so I hope this news will be enough."

Meanwhile, Skrtel has revealed how he's spending the summer away from Melwood.

He said: "I have been in Greece but I plan to spend the rest of my holidays in Slovakia. I still need some more time to relax since the season was long. I still have some problems with my thighs but I hope I will be ready for the season."

LFC Scoops Tourism Award

Liverpool Football Club's Stadium Tours and Museum are celebrating having picked up the Best Large Visitor Attraction title at The Merseyside Partnership Annual Tourism Awards 2011.

The Club's fun and interactive stadium tours have trained guides and LFC football legends who provide fascinating insights into Anfield's celebrated past and takes in rarely seen areas of the stadium. LFC also offers a number of award-winning visitor days that provide a complete Anfield experience suitable for all the family and even allow the 'big kids' to train and play with hand-picked LFC legends. Visitors to Anfield follow in the footsteps of Shankly, Paisley and Dalglish, sit in the same dressing room as Gerrard, Suarez and Carragher and walk down the famous tunnel to emerge to the roar of the Anfield faithful.

The Club's family themed Boot Room restaurant opened last year and welcomes visitors to Anfield with quality, freshly prepared food with unique twists that add a little theatre to the dining experience.

Tom Cassidy, Commercial Tourism Manager at Liverpool Football Club, said: "We are delighted to be recognized with this prestigious award as we've taken a very different approach to the football club as a visitor attraction. Families from all over the world visit us every year and we are determined to continue making improvements and ensure they have an enjoyable experience when visiting Anfield."

The Large Visitor Attraction category was made up of seven finalists, and LFC beat off stiff competition from Albert Dock, Merseyside Maritime Museum, The Beatles Story, Knowsley Safari Park, Spaceport and Mersey Ferries to win the award.

TMP Chief Executive Lorraine Rogers added: "The Annual Tourism Awards event is an opportunity for all of the key organisations in the visitor economy to get together and celebrate the very significant collective progress and success that has been achieved. The winners of the awards go on to represent the city region at a national level and can help attract greater profile for the whole destination by being the best in their category."

Liverpool Football Club will now go forward to represent Liverpool City Region in the Large Visitor Attraction category of the Enjoy England Awards for Excellence next year.
