Reds Fume At Gerrard Injury

England and Liverpool have both confirmed that an agreement was broken over the amount of time Steven Gerrard would spend on the pitch against France.

After talks between the Merseyside club and England, it was agreed that Fabio Capello would play Gerrard for no more than an hour.

However, Gerrard ended up playing until just six minutes from time when he was forced off with a hamstring injury.

Capello's decision saw Liverpool's head of fitness and conditioning Darren Burgess post a tweet slamming England's behaviour as 'disgraceful'

In his tweet, which was removed 55 minutes after going up on Twitter, Burgess said: "Unbelievable from all associated with England and English FA with regard to Steven Gerrard's injury. Completely ignored agreement and past history.

"Completely amateurish and now we pay for their incompetence. Absolutely disgraceful."

Capello admitted that an injury to Gareth Barry meant he had to stay on beyond the previously agreed schedule.

However, Capello insisted that any club cannot dictate to a national team how long somebody should play.

"We spoke with Steve and he said he would play one hour, but after Barry's injury we had some problems," admitted Capello.

"That was the reason he stayed on the pitch. If it's possible, the players will play the time we agreed with the club.

"But Barry was really injured so we needed someone senior on the pitch because it was a really young team. He said he was good.

"They [Liverpool] asked that he can play one hour if it's possible. They can't decide how long a player plays with the national team.

"If it's possible, he'd have played an hour. I understand why they're upset and I'm also upset.

"The problem is that, when you play this game on Wednesday after a lot of Premier League, Europa League or Champions League games, it's possible there might be an injury for a player. The Premier League, every time, is a tough league for the players."

"We're upset about what happened to Steve, of course."

Roy Hodgson Targets FC Copenhagen Left-Back Oscar Wendt

Liverpool are interested in signing FC Copenhagen's Swedish left-back Oscar Wendt, according to club scout Jakob Friis-Hansen.

Twenty-five-year-old Wendt has been at the Danish club since 2006 and has indicated that he plans to leave when his contract runs out at the end of the Danish season.

Tottenham Hotspur and AS Roma have been linked with the player in the past and Friis-Hansen had revealed that Liverpool are particularly keen to bring the player to Anfield to bolster Roy Hodgson’s squad.

''We are keeping a good eye on Oscar," Friis-Hansen told The Expressen.

"He does a great job, but he must play at a high level every week. In Denmark, there are just a few high-quality games.’’

Friis-Hansen says FC Basel left-back Behrang Safari, another Sweden international, is also being monitored by the club, who already have summer signing Paul Konchesky and Fabio Aurelio on their books, with Emiliano Insua, another left-back, on loan at Galatasaray for the season.

Liverpool Challenge Arsenal And Chelsea In Race For European Wonderkid

Liverpool are the latest high-profile club to be linked with a move for Belgian starlet Romelu Lukaku.

The 17-year-old Anderlecht striker has been on the radar of Europe's elite for a few seasons now, and Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson is the latest Premier League manager to apparently run-the-rule over the player.

Heavily linked with Chelsea in the past, Didier Drogba is thought to have previously spoken to the player in a bid to entice him to Stamford Bridge.

Lukaku, dubbed 'the new Drogba' himself, has also been linked with Real Madrid, Inter Milan, Spurs and Arsenal during his relatively short career.

A prodigy in his current club's youth academy, the striker made his debut in 2009 and has scored 22 goals in 48 Belgian Pro League matches. At international level, a brace in last night's friendly win against Russia provided a hint of Lukaku's quality, with seven caps to his name already.

Liverpool will undoubtedly face competition for the player's signature should they make a move in January, although Irish website JOE.ie place the Anfield club in pole position to land the player.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is renowned for bringing the best out of young talent at the Emirates, and he too could consider a move for the player as the Gunners look to challenge on several fronts this season.

Chelsea will also be monitoring the situation, with Carlo Ancelotti keen to continue strengthening the current champions.

It is the Reds who are possibly most in need of the player's services though, with Hodgson thought to be searching for a new attacking foil for Fernando Torres at Liverpool. Lukaku could fit the bill nicely.

Griezmann Agent Denies Offer

Antoine Griezmann's agent has denied that there has been any offer for the Real Sociedad winger, despite reported interest from Liverpool.

The 19-year-old French starlet is thought to have caught the eye of the Reds after bursting onto the scene for the Spanish club.

Griezmann was a revelation for Sociedad as they won promotion to La Liga last season and has continued his impressive form this term.

Liverpool director of football Damien Comolli is thought to be an admirer of the attacker, but his agent John Williams denies an offer is on the table.

He said: "I have received many questions about Antoine but now there are no offers on the table."

Griezmann has represented France at youth level and is believed to command a fee in the €7million (£6m) region.

He has a contract in San Sebastian that runs until the summer of 2015 and Sociedad are keen to retain the talented youngster.

Liverpool Fans Haven't Seen The True Me Yet - Christian Poulsen

Christian Poulsen insists that there is still a lot more to come from him at Liverpool.

The Danish midfielder arrived in a £4.5 million deal with Juventus during the summer, but has since been unable to create a significant impact in the squad.

Even manager Roy Hodgson has admitted that the 30-year-old has had a bad start to his career on Merseyside, as the former Sevilla man is yet to win over the fans.

"I don’t think the Liverpool fans have seen the true me yet," Poulsen said, according to The Mirror.

"We have a new coach, new backroom staff, new players and now new owners. It has taken time for us to find ourselves as a team.

"We have had some victories and I hope we can move further up the table. I really want to play a big part here."

Poulsen also maintained that he has no regrets about making the switch to join the Reds during the summer, despite the criticism he has taken in recent times.

"Juventus was a good experience and I feel positive about my time there," he said. "But I understand it was also time for me to move on and when Liverpool approached me, I wasn’t going to say no. Every day when I drive through the gates at Melwood, I realise this is the biggest club I’ve played for.

"I knew I was coming to a big, big club and that competition for places in the team would be very tough.

"There has been a lot of pressure because the start of the season hasn’t been so good. But I’m happy to be here. Everything is in place for me to try and get back into the team and make an impact on Liverpool’s season."

Alberto Aquilani Wants Glen Johnson To Join Him At Juventus

Juventus are considering a bid to keep Alberto Aquilani permanently – as the midfielder claims he wants Glen Johnson to join him in Turin.

The Italian international moved to Juve on loan in August after a disappointing spell with Liverpool last season.

He has subsequently recaptured his form, scoring once in 10 appearances and seemingly enjoying being back in the more sedate arena of Serie A

Giuseppe Marotta – Juve’s Sporting Director – said: “From our side there is complete resolve.

“He’s doing better than expected. We have until June next year to do the deal.”

Aquilani never settled on Merseyside but he did strike up a friendship with right-back Johnson and he said: “What former Liverpool team-mate would I bring to Juventus? I would take Glen Johnson.

“I hope to convince the directors of Juventus to buy me from Liverpool,” added Aquilani.

At Juve I would like to open a new era with the team. Sixteen million euros is a lot, but they can negotiate.

“Juve was a huge opportunity for me, I could not lose it.

“Leaving Italy was not easy, I faced many life changes. It also depends on me but if they (Juventus) want me then I will remain.”

Ngog Aims To Be 'Complete'

Liverpool striker David Ngog wants to improve every attribute in his attacking arsenal.

The 21-year-old Frenchman remains second choice to Fernando Torres at Anfield, but amid his club's struggles he has shown clear signs of development in his form and conditioning this season.

Ngog has scored seven goals in all competitions and his hold-up play in a lone role has advanced in the last 12 months.

The former Paris St Germain forward wants to continue to progress under new manager Roy Hodgson, who has shown faith in the youngster, and he is not afraid of hard graft.

"I did a lot of work in the gym last season and have continued that this year," Ngog told LFC Weekly magazine.

"As a team we have also been doing more strength work since the new fitness coaches arrived. I think all that work has made a difference to my game.

"With working in the gym, time and experience you learn to use your body in a better way.

"I think year after year I will get better at that. You pick up more tricks and different ways to hold the ball up. You are more prepared for physical opponents.

"I work on my all-round game all the time, not just being stronger. I want to be involved in different areas of the pitch, not just in the box.

"I want to have lots of different qualities, to be the complete striker. Obviously it's important for a striker to score goals. But you have to be able to do a lot of other things too."

Juve Want Aquilani Permanently

Juventus are keen to tie down Liverpool loanee Alberto Aquilani on a permanent deal, according to sporting director Giuseppe Marotta.

Italy midfielder Aquilani, who arrived at Anfield from Roma in August 2009, is currently on a season-long loan with the Serie A club.

The 26-year-old has impressed for the Bianconeri so far this term, helping them climb to fourth in the standings, and Marotta confirmed Juventus are eager to retain his services.

When questioned on the possibility of signing the Italian on a permanent contract, he said: "From our side there is the complete resolve to do this. He's doing better than expected.

"(But) we have time, until June next year to do this."

Marotta admitted Juve are looking at bolstering their resources when the transfer window opens in January.

He added: "In January we will try to strengthen the team, always in the context of our business plan."

Liverpool Line Up Dutch Legend For Shock Anfield Move

Frank Rijkaard is the bookies favourite to replace under-fire Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson.

The former Fulham boss is under increased scrutiny at Anfield following the weekend defeat to Stoke, and the odds have dramatically shortened on Rijkaard becoming the new man at the Liverpool helm.

Martin O’Neill and Guus Hiddink are also thought to be in contention, while Liverpool fans’ favourite Kenny Dalglish is a 12/1 shot with SkyBet.

New Reds owner John W. Henry has given his backing to the current Anfield management teaming, stating that Liverpool do not need a quick fix to resolve the current problems on Merseyside.

However, with financial investment in the squad set to be made during the January transfer window, speculation is rife that NESV could make a change at Anfield’s top position.

Bookmakers slashed their odds on a predecessor to Hodgson following the defeat in the Potteries, and the former Barcelona manager making his Premier League entrance at Liverpool appears to be a distinct possibility.

Sammy Lee Calls For Liverpool FC Consistency

Sammy Lee has promised no stone will be left unturned as Liverpool bid to find the consistency that will get them climbing the table once more.

The Reds have slipped up in the last two games against Stoke City and Wigan Athletic, having given the impression they had turned the corner with a four-match unbeaten run that culminated with a 2-0 win over Chelsea.

Liverpool are currently 11th in the Premier League standings but the volatile nature of the division means teams can easily climb the table if they happen to string a decent run of results together in a short space of time.

A glance at Liverpool’s fixtures over the coming six weeks suggests there is an opportunity to make ground if Roy Hodgson’s men can discover the right blend and Lee hopes they will put things right in style.

“I can understand the euphoria after our win over Chelsea but we have always said that we take nothing for granted,” said the assistant manager. “We got a great result against Chelsea and then followed it up with two indifferent results.

“We are all asking that question about consistency, none more so the players. These players want to improve, get better and be more consistent.

“We are all in it together and are all trying to find how we can get back to a more consistent vein of form. Even after the win against Chelsea we were still complaining and analyzing things that we need to improve on. I can promise everyone that we are still working hard and trying to put things right.”

Liverpool look to have the perfect opportunity to get back on track this weekend when they welcome the Premier League’s bottom side to Anfield but, as always, Lee is respectful of West Ham United’s merits.

What’s more, he has warned that if Liverpool perform as they did against Stoke, they are likely to encounter even more problems

“Every game is difficult in this league and we have got to take each one as it comes,” Lee said. “Stoke were aggressive and physical against us and we should have resisted it. Unfortunately we didn’t do enough of that – but we’ve got to forget about that now.

“I don’t look at the league table until the end of the season because there are no easy games and each one has it’s own degree of difficulty. We will be looking for maximum effort against West Ham in our next game from everybody.

“Hopefully our quality can prevail but it won’t be easy. They will come here and try to shut up shop and try and prevent us from playing our game plan, but we need to make sure our game plan is better than West Ham’s on the day.”

Liverpool Left-Back Fabio Aurelio Says He's Ready To Face West Ham

Liverpool left-back Fabio Aurelio says he's ready to play against West Ham United on Saturday after recovering from Achilles and groin problems.

The Brazilian, who has not played for the first team since the Europa League win in Trabzonspor on August 26 featured for the reserves on Tuesday against Blackpool.

"I feel good after the 75 minutes for the reserves and I'm ready for Saturday if the manager needs me," Aurelio told Liverpoolfc.tv.

"I have been training well and I was in the squad for the Stoke game but didn't make the bench. Hopefully I can play on Saturday.

"It was good to get some minutes against Blackpool and I enjoyed being back. Hopefully I can start a run of games for the first team now.

"It has been frustrating not to play but I have been working hard and kept my confidence up.

"I had an Achilles problem and then after I played for the reserves in a friendly at Huddersfield I suffered a small groin problem, but now I feel good and I'm ready to work hard for the manager.

"The more you play the more confidence you have. I'm feeling good and just want to play again."

Liverpool Prepare £7m Bid For Exciting Winger Antoine Griezmann

Liverpool are reportedly prepared to spend £7million on Real Sociedad winger Antoine Griezmann.

The Anfield club has been linked with the 19-year-old before, but the Daily Mail claims that Liverpool's director of football strategy Damien Comolli has previously had contact with the player while at St Etienne and is now keen to sign him for Liverpool.

Griezmann is a goal-scoring winger with great technique, strength and pace, somewhat reminiscent of Cristiano Ronaldo. The Frenchman can also play as a striker. Despite being left-footed, Griezmann can also unleash a powerful shot and provide great passes with his right. He is also a free-kick specialist and takes corner kicks regularly.

Griezmann is a highly talented player who enjoyed his first professional season last term in which he was instrumental in leading Real Sociedad back to the top flight. He has also started this season in good form, scoring three goals in ten games so far.

Given his growing reputation, Liverpool are unlikely to be the only club interested in signing Griezmann.

Liverpool Renew Interest In Former Tottenham Man Reto Ziegler

Liverpool have renewed their interest in Sampdoria's Reto Ziegler , according to German and Italian reports.

The former Tottenham man's contract with Sampdoria expires at the end of the season, and negotiations about an extension appear to have stalled.

The German 4-4-2 Web site says Juventus, Liverpool and Werder Bremen are chasing the 24-year-old Swiss international, while Tutto Mercato says the Reds and Valencia CF are after his services.

Ziegler is quite a quick and talented left back/left midfielder who has great technical ability and sends in nice crosses.

His neat football impressed Tottenham fans in the 2006⁄2007 season, before the youngster was sold to Sampdoria.

Due to his contract ending in June, he is valued at €2.5M-5M.

Milan Jovanovic & Ryan Babel To Be Used As Bait For Lucas Barrios

Liverpool are ready to table a bid for Dortmund striker Lucas Barrios, offering either Ryan Babel or Milan Jovanovic as well as cash as part of a deal in the January transfer window, according to reports.

The Paraguayan international is reported to have a £10 million price tag, and he is also attracting the interest of Italian giants AC Milan, according to talkSPORT.

The 26-year-old has scored seven goals for Dortmund in the Bundesliga this season, and the Paraguayan has reportedly been on Liverpool’s radar for a while, as former Reds manager Rafael Benitez seemingly hoped to bring him to Anfield during his managerial stint.

Martin Skrtel Withdraws From Slovakia Squad For Bosnia-Herzegovina Friendly

Slovakia coach Vladimir Weiss will have to make do without the services of highly rated Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel when his men take on Bosnia-Herzegovina in Wednesday's international friendly.

The towering centre-back sustained an injury in his side's 2-0 league loss against Stoke City last weekend and will be sidelined for a few days as a result.

"I've had problems with my knee and ankle since the Stoke game. Before half-time, one of the opposing players kicked me in the knee from behind and I had to finish the game under pain-killers," Skrtel was quoted as saying by Sky Sports.

"Besides that, I also twisted my ankle, which has been haunting me since a friendly game against Costa Rice in June. Right after the game, I called the Slovakia coach and explained my situation to him. I'm glad he understood and gave me free time.

"It would make no sense to travel to Slovakia and be there for two days when it is uncertain whether I would play or not. If it was a qualifier I would surely travel, but this way we have agreed it's better for me to stay in Liverpool and try to recover."

Liverpool FC Academy Must Focus On British Youngsters, Says Damien Comolli

Liverpool FC's director of football strategy Damien Comolli admits increased competition to sign young players means the club must prioritise British-born talent in their search for the next generation of Anfield academy stars.

In his first interview since joining Liverpool following New England Sports Ventures’ takeover, Comolli set down his blueprint for taking the club forward under the new American owners, with the development of the club’s youth programmes paramount in his plans.

With Premier League clubs casting their nets ever wider in the search for up-and-coming stars, the academy education that once was the preserve of British youngsters has been extended to overseas talent.

Comolli admits Liverpool will still employ a global scouting network, but said the club’s priority will be to retain a core element of English talent, typified in the current squad by the likes of Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher.

"We really want to concentrate on getting young English or British kids. I think that’s very important if we want to keep an identity to get those kids into the football club," Comolli said.

"Usually the big European clubs don’t come into England to get players so there will be massive competition in England with all the other big clubs, and then if we need to go abroad or decide to bring in a young kid from a foreign country because we think he’s a top talent then there will be competition with other clubs.

"There are two things. You need to spot them, identify them, make sure they’ve got the right attitude, the right mentality, the right spirit that you want them around on a day-to-day basis.

"The second thing is convincing them to come. That requires a lot of time, it requires a skill set from the scouts, or from myself."

Comolli revealed he expects former Liverpool player and manager Kenny Dalglish to have a big role to play in the recruitment of young players in his role as academy ambassador.

"I’m sure Kenny can have a massive impact if he meets the kid or his parents," Comolli continued.

"That’s almost the most difficult part. Spotting a fantastic player is not that difficult, convincing them to come to us, that comes back to competition and that can be more difficult.

"We will have to be very, very good at it."

He added: "The academy comes under my remit and I’m really looking forward to helping the guys continue to develop. I think for the last 12 or 15 months they have worked very well.

"I had time to look at the coaching programmes and what they are trying to do. They are very eager, motivated, they want to develop players, they want to get the best for the club, they want to be one of the leading academies in Europe."

McMahon Rues Missed Chances

John McMahon felt missed opportunities cost his side dear as the reserves were held to a 1-1 draw with Blackpool at the Academy on Tuesday afternoon.

Nathan Eccleston had given the Reds the lead with a superbly crafted goal, but Ishmel Demontagnac equalised for the away side with a shot that looped over Brad Jones and found the net.

"I thought we played some football but it's all about end product and we didn't have that today," McMahon told Liverpoolfc.tv.

"We started well and Nathan scored a good goal but it was a pity we didn't have more of that inventiveness and clever play around the box.

"The general play and organisation was good but it's just disappointing we couldn't finish them off because when you don't do that there is always the chance you can concede.

"I can't be too disappointed because we played against some experienced players out there and for our young lads that's great for their development."

Fabio Aurelio made a welcome return to action when he played for 75 minutes and McMahon reported it was a successful comeback.

"It was always planned to give Fabio 75 minutes and he showed what quality he does have on the ball.

"He is fine and he helps the other lads out.

"He is a fantastic professional. He always does things right and it is a pleasure to have him with the group."

Liverpool FC Owner John Henry Sets Out His Vision For The Reds

Owner John W Henry has urged Liverpool’s players to give everything to help lead the club up the Premier League table.

The American, who also revealed that his sports investment company New England Sports Ventures (NESV) will change its name to Fenway Sports Group, reiterated his promise to restore the Reds to their former glory.

But he insists success will only come if everyone is pulling in the same direction.

Speaking to the independent Liverpool FC website Red and White Kop, he said: “The club has gone through a very difficult period and the period has not ended.

“It’s up to us to build a winner going forward. It’s up to them (the players) to determine to win now. We saw a certain team on the field against Chelsea last week that showed what they can do.

“We also know how competitive the EPL is this year. There are no guaranteed matches any longer for any club. This club can be better.

“Blaming the manager or any one particular player is simply wrong. This club needs to play up to their potential every match. If they don’t, they won’t win.”

Looking further into the future, Henry vowed to invest in the playing squad but believes the club will conduct most of its business next summer rather than in January.

“We have work to do and must invest in this club to improve it on the field,” he added. “Can that be successfully done in January? A number of people I’ve talked with doubt it.

“Most people seem to think it will be the summer before we can really begin to improve. So the players – all 11 each week – have to be on the same page every match and have to live up to the history and respect this club has engendered – no matter what.

“I’ve met with a number of our players and had private discussions with some of them. I’ve been greatly impressed by them personally. They are all exceptionally bright and they all want to be here.

“The question they have had, rightfully so, is whether or not the club is going to go in the right direction. They all want to see that. I have been very forthright about our philosophy and about what we are going to try to achieve.

“Some would prefer a quick fix. Others prefer to focus on the long-term and that is very difficult for most players.

“But this club needs everyone on the same page every day. We need everyone focused on what needs to be done in the next match facing us and during that match.

“The club should not have to settle for less. As one insightful player told me, “The spirit of the side needs to be there like a family – as one.”

Responding to fans’ fears about a lack of football expertise and experience at senior management and board level, Henry pointed to the recent appointment of Damien Comolli as director of football strategy.

He said: “Damien has a philosophy that is similar to ours and what has made us successful in Boston. But he is just our first appointment.

“We don’t know English football, but we do know the sports business and what it takes to be successful.

“You must first of all have the right people in place and you must be able to give them the resources they need to be successful. With the new Financial Fair Play Rules coming into effect next year, we know that we need to emphasize revenue growth. That is an area we feel we are very strong.

“The best way to market Liverpool FC globally is to win because the fanbase is already so large globally. If we build the right team on the field, everything off the field will take care of itself.”

Henry said chairman Tom Werner and himself will be frequent visitors to Anfield.

He said: “We will be in London and Liverpool with regularity. There is a lot to be done. We speak about the Sox and LFC daily – seven days a week.

“We are working on teleconferencing as well as spending time in Liverpool. In the digital world of today one can say almost nothing is local. It has never been easier to work from a distance.

“But like Fenway, Anfield will be hard to stay away from. We’ve really enjoyed our time in Liverpool thus far.”

Asked what Liverpool’s new owners can give to Liverpool in terms of a personal vision and philosophy, Henry said: “We will have to be bold, thoughtful and aggressive in order to do the right thing for the community, for the supporters and for the club long-term.

“Liverpool values are well known. What makes Anfield so special beyond the history of the ground are the people who populate Anfield each match. They value the club first and foremost.

“That is what we have to ensure every person who wears a kit or works for the club at any level has in the their minds first and foremost – the club comes first.

“In Boston every player who puts on a Boston Red Sox uniform knows what it means to wear that uniform. It’s something very special. Wearing that uniform has a great deal of meaning.

“We have a Red Sox way that is discussed in spring training each year. It is a privilege to work for the Boston Red Sox at any level. We have Red Sox Ambassadors who spend their days ensuring that people outside of the organization know how much all of us inside the organization appreciate our fans and visitors to Fenway Park.

“The values that we have to strive for within the club at Liverpool emanate from the supporters. We cannot have anyone at the club who when they walk into the Academy, Melwood or Anfield, aren’t aware of club values and that the club comes first and foremost.

“We have to have everyone from top to bottom on the same page – exactly the same page. And we will.

“We will make mistakes and it will be up to us to correct them. With the level of support this club has, if we are all on the same page, we will be incredibly successful.”

Comolli Outlines Liverpool Transfer Plans

New Liverpool director of football strategy Damien Comolli insists that he will be working closely with Roy Hodgson to bring new faces to Anfield in the coming transfer windows and stressed that his position will not undermine the manager.

Comolli joined Liverpool from Saint Etienne two weeks ago and it has been suggested that the club's new owners appointed him as a result of doubts about Hodgson's transfer record since taking arriving at Anfield.

Hodgson has brought Joe Cole, Paul Konchesky, Christian Poulsen and Raul Meireles to the club, but all have flattered to deceive thus far, and it is thought that John Henry sought out Comolli in a bid to improve the quality of new recruits.

But Comolli has moved quickly to play down reports that he will have final say in any future transfers, insisting that he and Hodgson will work together to target new players.

"I think it was just a feeling between the owners and Roy as well that they wanted someone to be in there and come and help on a daily basis, support Roy in terms of making sure there is the best structure around all the club in all the areas which are football related," Comolli told Liverpool's official website.

"In the short term, in my position you always think of the next window or the next two windows and I think everybody has got this in mind. As I've just joined, we've got only a few weeks to prepare for the window but we are also looking at the summer transfer window.

"That's what I would call short term but then long term we are already looking at things like the pre-season tour for next season, we are already looking at the academy to see what we can improve, what the targets are there in England, young players who we could bring in, the same thing about Europe, to identify players around Europe that we'll be trying to bring in. It's a mix of short term and long term which I think is one of the beauties of this job.

Comolli has built a strong reputation for spotting talent during spells at Monaco, Arsenal - where he helped unearth Gael Clichy and Kolo Toure - and Tottenham. Comolli was responsible for bringing the likes of Gareth Bale and Luka Modric to the White Hart Lane, though he also facilitated the signings of the significantly less successful Adel Taarabt and David Bentley.

After clashing with then-Spurs manager Martin Jol, who complained several players had been signed without his permission, Comolli was later sacked along with Jol's successor Juande Ramos.

But the 37-year-old Frenchman is confident that a strong relationship with Hodgson will help bring the Reds success.

"We've been talking at length since I joined, several times a day on different issues and different matters, not only related to the transfer window or to scouting, we talk about everything. I think this relationship is going to grow in a positive way, that's for sure. We see things the same way. So far everything we have discussed we totally agree and have the same vision. I expect that's going to go on.

"When you see the clubs he has managed and the national teams he has managed, what he's done at Fulham, what he's done at Blackburn and obviously being in charge here. Obviously, when you have managed Inter Milan as well and all the pressure there is there at one of the biggest clubs in the world, you have to have respect for what he's done.

"I think sometimes it becomes controversial and it should not be. As John Henry said, it will be a consensus among us. That's the way John sees it, that's the way I see it and that's the way Roy sees it. The manager's decision and the manager's opinion on a player is absolutely crucial."

Liverpool In Shock Link To £8 Million Defender

Liverpool are being linked with a shock January move for Middlebrough defender David Wheater.

The Championship centre back has previously been linked with Premier League clubs, but club chairman Steve Gibson has constantly resisted selling Boro's prize asset. However, interest from Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson could force the club to cash-in on the player.

Wheater graduated through the club's academy to become one of the top players at the Riverside, learning his trade during three loan spells before becoming a regular in the north east.

Tipped to leave the club after Premier League relegation back in 2008-09, Wheater decided to stay in a bid to help Middlesbrough return to the top flight of English football.

After last season's failed attempt and a change of management at the club, Liverpool are thought to be in a position to make an offer the player can't refuse.

Hodgson has courted the player in the past, making an offer during his time as manager at Fulham. A versatile defender, the 23-year-old could play in a central or full back position for Liverpool.

The Reds have been promised money to spend by new owners NESV, with Hodgson set to have around £35 million at his Anfield disposal in 2011.

'Five or six' players are thought to be on the agenda, with Liverpool looking to add strength-in-depth in a number of core positions.

The Metro reports that Liverpool are considering a bid for the player, with West Ham, Stoke and Everton also thought to be keen on the player.
